How To Frame A Garage Door Wall

Building your own garage can be a great way to save money and get exactly what you want. However, if you have never framed a garage door wall before, it can seem like a daunting task. With the right steps, you can easily frame a garage door wall that is sturdy and secure.

Materials You'll Need

Before you start, you will need to gather some materials:

  • 2x6 lumber
  • 2x4 lumber
  • Garage door header
  • Garage door track
  • Anchors
  • Insulation
  • Drywall

Step 1: Frame the Jambs

The first step is to frame the jambs for the garage door. The jambs are the vertical supports that will support the header.

  1. Cut two 2x6 pieces of lumber to the length of the garage door opening.
  2. Cut two 2x4 pieces of lumber for the top and bottom of the jambs.
  3. Assemble the jambs by attaching the 2x4 pieces to the top and bottom of the 2x6 pieces with 3-inch screws.

Step 2: Install the Header

Once the jambs are framed, you need to install the header. The header is the horizontal support that will support the weight of the garage door.

  1. Cut a 2x6 piece of lumber to the width of the garage door opening.
  2. Center the header on the top of the jambs and attach it with 3-inch screws.

Step 3: Frame the Rest of the Wall

After the header is installed, you can frame the rest of the wall. Frame out the rest of the walls just like you would when framing any other wall.

Step 4: Install Drywall and Insulation

The next step is to install the drywall and insulation. The insulation will help to keep your garage warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Step 5: Install the Garage Door

The final step is to install the garage door. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing your particular garage door.

Tips

Here are a few tips to make the job easier:

  • Use a level to make sure that the jambs and the header are level.
  • Use a chalk line to mark the studs on the wall so that you can easily locate them when you are attaching the drywall.
  • Make sure that the garage door is properly insulated so that it will not lose heat in the winter or allow heat to enter in the summer.
