How to Build Hanging Shelves in Garage

Hanging shelves are a great way to add extra storage space to your garage without taking up too much floor space. They can be used to store everything from tools and equipment to seasonal items and sporting goods. Building hanging shelves is a relatively easy project that can be completed in a few hours. Here are the steps you'll need to follow: ### Materials 1. (Qty 2) 1x8x8' pine boards 2. (Qty 4) 1x6x8' pine boards 3. (Qty 8) 2-1/2" wood screws 4. (Qty 4) 3" wood screws 5. (Qty 4) 1" wood screws 6. 1" brad nails 7. Wood glue 8. Clamps 9. Measuring tape 10. Level 11. Pencil 12. Circular saw 13. Drill 14. Hammer ### Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Cut the boards

Cut the 1x8x8' pine boards into two 48" lengths. These will be the sides of the shelves. Cut the 1x6x8' pine boards into two 48" lengths and two 24" lengths. The 48" lengths will be the front and back of the shelves, and the 24" lengths will be the supports for the shelves.

Step 2: Assemble the sides

Apply wood glue to the ends of one of the 48" lengths of 1x8 pine board. Place the other 48" length of 1x8 pine board on top of the first, aligning the edges. Clamp the boards together and drill two 2-1/2" wood screws through the top board and into the bottom board. Repeat this process to attach the other two 48" lengths of 1x8 pine board.

Step 3: Attach the front and back

Apply wood glue to the bottom edge of one of the 48" lengths of 1x6 pine board. Place the board on the bottom edge of the assembled sides, aligning the edges. Clamp the board in place and drill two 2-1/2" wood screws through the board and into the sides. Repeat this process to attach the other 48" length of 1x6 pine board to the top edge of the assembled sides.

Step 4: Attach the supports

Apply wood glue to the ends of one of the 24" lengths of 1x6 pine board. Place the board on the inside of one of the assembled sides, about 12" from the bottom. Clamp the board in place and drill two 2-1/2" wood screws through the board and into the side. Repeat this process to attach the other 24" length of 1x6 pine board to the other side.

Step 5: Finish the shelves

Sand any rough edges on the shelves. You can also paint or stain the shelves if you want.

Step 6: Hang the shelves

Mark the location of the studs in the wall where you want to hang the shelves. Drill two 1" wood screws into each stud, spacing the screws about 16" apart. Hang the shelves on the screws. ### Tips If you are hanging the shelves in a particularly heavy or humid area, you may want to use toggle bolts instead of wood screws. Toggle bolts are designed to hold more weight and are less likely to pull out of the wall. If you are storing particularly heavy items on the shelves, you may want to add additional supports to the shelves. You can do this by adding a piece of 1x4 pine board to the center of the shelf and securing it with wood screws. Hanging shelves is a great way to add extra storage space to your garage without taking up too much floor space. By following the steps in this guide, you can easily build hanging shelves that will meet your needs.
